Promoting small-scale farming in the southern countries: a stake for fighting poverty and for food security of next generations

Global objectives

  • The promotion of sustainable development that encourages the development of small-scale farming.
  • The evolution of the perceptions and practices of the European professionals of the rural areas in favour of small-scale farming.
  • The evolution of the agricultural policies in favour of small-scale farming.

Specific objective

  • Agricultural professionals and representatives, local representatives of the rural areas, and students in agricultural schools are sensitised and mobilised in Europe in favour of small-scale farming.

Target groups

  • 800 responsibles and professionals from the rural sector(livestock farmers, farmers, veterinarians, farmers’ organizations and agri-food companies) and local authorities form the rural sector of the 4 EU countries.
  • 780 students from European agriculture and veterinarians schools

  • The development of small-scale farming in developing countries

Related issues

  • poverty and peasantry in the South; food sovereignty in the southern countries; Internationalisation of the exchanges and its impact on the peasant’s economies in the south but also in the northern countries.

Expected results

  • The members of the VSF-Europa network and their partners of the South have appropriate educational tools on small-scale farming, food sovereignty and the internationalisation of food commodities.
  • Professionals and local authorities from rural areas in Europe are better informed about rural development at global level, and engage in sensitisation initiatives and cooperation actions in favour of small-scale farmers.
  • Students from European agricultural and veterinary schools are sensitised and trained on the situation of small-scale farmers in the world and on the impacts of the internationalisation of the exchanges.

Main activities

Production of pedagogic tools

  • The members of VSF-Europa conduct an inventory of existing tools
  • Identification and consultation with partners of the South already leading advocacy actions, the aim of participating in the coproduction of pedagogic tools.
  • Coproduction of pedagogic tools on the problematic of rural development, with the partners of the South.

Sensitisation of professionals from the rural sector and local authorities:

  • Organisation of conferences for the professionals of the rural areas and the local representatives on the thematic of the action.
  • Identification of professionals of the rural areas and of local representatives, wishing to participate in exchanges meetings.
  • Organisation of exchange meetings to share experiences between professionals of the rural areas, local representatives of Europe and local representatives of developing countries.
  • Capitalisation and diffusion of the experiences by the production of guides and press articles

Elaboration and animation of a sensitisation program for students

  • Preparation of the sensitisation courses with the pedagogical teams of the schools concerned.
  • Animation and assessment of the courses toward the target public.
  • Prospection towards new possible partners from the CEEC
